Layered Approach to Commercial Security
Layered Approach to Commercial Security
by Jay Berman, CEO Premiere Surveillance Systems, LLC
There isn’t any single thing you can do to secure your property or premises, there are many things you can do to prevent and deter criminals from inflicting damage to your property. Surveillance cameras are part of this, it is imperative that a quality system is used, not the systems you see at warehouse stores. Those systems typically are low resolution analog cameras with LED IR emitters. The lenses are generally low quality plastic and these systems are mainly made in China. Image clarity is critical, the crook may dress in a hoodie or other atire that hides his features, anything you can gleen from the image can help law enfocement such as a part of a tattoo or a scar. Camera placement is also critical, they must be positioned so they are not blinded by sunlight or other artificial light, exterior cameras should be high enough so they are not disturbed but not so high that you can’t get a good view. The lower the azimuth, the more forward detail of your subject will be captured. Never have exposed cables.
Cameras are just one of these layers, another is a good monitored alarm system. All doors should have sensors and all glass windows should have break detectors. Inside motion detectors strateically positioned are also recomended. Your alarm should not be a silent type as deterence is your friend. You want the crook to be as uncompfortable as you can so they don’t hang out. Get the loudest siren available and position it in the ceiling, out of site closest to the area you think is most vulnerable to break-in. Many robberies are inside jobs, be sure each employee has their own alarm code and be sure to delete it immediately after the employee leaves, keep these codes secure in a safe. Speaking of safes, if you have one be sure it is securely bolted to the floor and wall if possible. They are heavy but 2 guys can move them so bolt it down and LOCK it !
If you have plate glass windows, they make a security film that can be applied to the inside, what this does is when the glass is broken, it stays intact making it difficult and time consuming for the crook to get in, make it difficult.
Lighting is another easy layer. Cameras with IR emitters are no solution, actually they are fairly worthless. Change your light switches to motion activated switches, if someone comes in the lights go on, your camera gets a good image and the crook flees. The exterior of your building should also have motion lights, get close they go on or have full time lights if possible. Another thing that makes your property unattractive to crooks.
Premiere Surveillance Systems works with our clients, advising them on their total security. Our specialty is high definition mega pixel camera systems only, we have partners that are specialists in other fields such as alarms. We can manage implemetation of a total security solution. Our service area is Southern California, San Diego, Orange and Riverside Counties. We also have the capability of connecting our cameras over distance by using secure wireless technology. This comes in handy for installations with numerous buildings. Usually you would have to trench in cables, in a wireless infrastructure we build rooftop networks connected by radios with up to 2 mile range. We also use this technology along with solar for agricultural surveillance systems to monitor groves, fields and vineyards.
